Close up photo of what the Alumalite sign material looks like

Alumalite is a strong, aluminum composite metal sign panel with a high density, copolymer corrugated plastic core. Similar in construction to Dibond, Alumalite has two sheets of aluminum permanently bonded to both sides of a corrugated plastic core, sandwiching the plastic panel in between.

The aluminum sides provide rigidity and durability to the sign, while the fluted plastic core makes Alumalite a very lightweight sign panel. It will not swell or corrode from the inside which makes it a perfect choice for outdoor applications. Available in the sign industry primarily for outdoor use, custom Alumalite signs feature a factory aluminum high gloss finish and is warranted not to crack, chip, flake or peel.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alumalite Metal Signs
"What exactly is Alumalite sign material?"
Alumalite is a strong, aluminum composite metal sign panel with a high density, copolymer corrugated plastic core. Alumalite has two factory-painted sheets of aluminum permanently bonded to both sides of a corrugated plastic core, sandwiching the plastic panel in between.
"How long will an Alumalite sign last?"
The Alumalite material itself will usually outlast the artwork on your sign. Our uncoated Economy Grade Signs are rated to last up to 3 years outdoors while our Standard and Premium Grade Signs coated with an optically clear, UV Protective Lamination are rated to last up to 5 years and 6-8 Years outdoors, respectively. Alumalite signs can last for decades indoors.
"Which sign materials are stronger than Alumalite?"
ARMOUR-Wood and wood are the only materials that are considered to be stronger than Alumalite.
"Which sign materials are weaker than Alumalite?"
Dibond and Aluminum both have lower relative strength than Alumalite.
"Where are Alumalite signs commonly used?"

Alumalite metal signs are the perfect solution when the panel weight must remain low while retaining excellent rigidity. Some of the applications that it works well for are:

  • Permanent outdoor business signage
  • Construction site signs
  • Real estate signs
  • Wall mounted signs
  • Post and panel
  • Hanging
  • Fence mount
  • Multiple panel signs
  • Point of purchase displays
  • Score boards and more
"How much do Alumalite signs weigh?"
This depends on the thickness you choose as well as the overall size of the sign. However, Alumalite is a lightweight material in general.
"Will Alumalite withstand strong winds?"
The 1/4" thick Alumalite will easily withstand moderate winds - approximately 40 mph. If you occasionally have stronger winds in your area we recommend the 1/2" material
"How well will Alumalite hold up in the sun?"
Alumalite is designed to hold up for extended periods to both sun and heat extremes.
"How is Alumalite mounted?"

When mounting Alumalite signs with screws or bolts, the corrugated plastic core can compress because it's hollow. When you attach the sign, TIGHTEN THE SCREW BY HAND. When the screw head is flush with the sign panel, STOP! Continuing to tighten the screw will permanently damage the panel by compressing or squeezing the material together.

If you screw the Alumalite metal sign too tightly, this will create a circular shaped "ding" around the screw head and it will never come out.

"What sizes does Alumalite come in?"
We can cut standard 4'x8' sheet sizes to any size you need. The next larger standard size up is a 4' x 10'.
"What is the largest size available without seams?"
Alumalite is available in a jumbo sheet of 5' x 10'. This is the largest size available without seams.
"What is the down side to Alumalite?"

"What is the turnaround time for an Alumalite sign?"
Typically your Alumalite sign will ship within 48 hours of your final approval of your proof. If you need it faster than that, just let us know!
"Can Alumalite be cut into custom shapes?"

While we routinely cut Alumalite into custom sizes, we usually only cut it into rectangular or square shapes. We do not cut Alumalite into very customized shapes. The material does not lend itself to intricate cuts or shaping. Any custom shaping must be kept to a minimum. For intricate shapes we recommend other materials, such as Dibond or wood.

There are other products that are comparable to Alumalite. If you need more information about them you can read about Aluminum signs, Dibond signs, and ARMOUR-Wood signs at their individual product pages.

"What colors can I make my Alumalite sign?"

We offer more colors for Alumalite signs than anyone out there on the web!

With the new digital printing technology your Alumalite sign can be ANY color under the sun when designing your new signage. You can even choose a reflective color!

If you would like a specialty metal finish such as brushed gold, mirror gold, brushed silver or mirror silver, they are available in our Dibond sign material, which is made up of two aluminum sheets on either side of a solid plastic core, or with standard aluminum signs.

"What is the best way to handle Alumalite Signs?"

During handling and installation of Alumalite signs, extreme care must be exercised. The painted finish is not as scratch resistant as you might think. Although Alumalite metal signs are highly weather and fade resistant, the paint can be easily scratched if you’re not careful.

When cleaning the surface, only use a mild soapy water solution and the softest cloth you can find. Don’t use dry paper towels as they can put extremely fine scratches in the paint which may be visible up close.

"Are custom Alumalite signs suitable for installation between two posts?"

While you can install larger Alumalite signs (like 6', 8' or 10' long) on or between posts, you have better options to choose from:

  1. ARMOUR-Wood is the strongest and most rigid exterior grade sign panel available with it’s dense, ½ inch thick solid wood core
  2. Alumalite (½” thickness) has almost the same panel strength as Aluma-Wood making it a popular choice for larger signs. ½” Alumalite is the 2nd strongest sign material
  3. Alumalite (¼” thickness) is still a strong, highly rigid background material and has the 3rd highest panel strength
  4. Dibond sign panels have 10 times more strength than .040” aluminum sheets. Dibond is not quite as stiff as Alumalite, but is still considered a rigid sign material making it #4 in strength

On a scale of 1 to 10, with “10” having the highest relative strength, here’s how each aluminum sign background material compares to one another:

Aluminum Chart

When you need a more rigid sign panel in a color other than white, you have three great options to choose from:

  1. Unpainted Alumalite panels can be completely covered with self-adhesive vinyl at our shop in your choice of any color.
  2. We can spray paint or powder coat Alumalite sheets any custom color you choose.
  3. You can choose another rigid composite aluminum sign material that has a broader range of factory painted colors available such as Dibond, Aluminum & ARMOUR-Wood.*

Usually, *Option #3 is not only the best choice, it's the most cost effective (but not always). For example, if you are looking for a gold metallic background color for a 2' x 3' x ½" Alumalite metal sign, the most cost effective solution would be to simply cover the Alumalite sign panel with gold metallic vinyl. It's fast, it's easy and highly durable.

Setting up to paint such a small sheet from stock or having to buy a whole 4' x 8' sheet just to get a small section of a special color isn't always practical. We'll gladly provide you with the best option to suit your individual needs at the time of your order.

"What are some important features of a custom Alumalite sign?"
  • Ideal for pressure sensitive vinyl which bonds securely to it. It has the same high gloss surface as vinyl graphics, so the final sign is visually coordinated.
  • Alumalite is strong and lightweight. It's about the same weight as .040 aluminum sheet metal, tipping the scales at just 24 lbs. However, Alumalite is over 50 times stronger for a 4' x 8' sheet.
  • When properly installed, Alumalite has an average outdoor life expectancy of 10 years
